Going back to School? Who Me?

I'm thinking of going back to school.

At 40, I am thinking of going back to learn something new.

It scares me.

Not the being 40 or part...but the going back to school part.

Writing papers, reading text books,  and taking exams scares me.

I will do some classes by correspondence first I think.

That way I can work full time and attempt school on the side.

If I fail utterly, than at least it is in the comfort of my own home.

I can't decide it I should do a Psychology or Sociology class to start.

Both areas interest me.

Hi, Ho! Hi, Ho! It's back to school I go!

Good for you! It's such a huge step, but I'm sure you'd do fantastically!

I am only 27, however well into my career and married and everything, I have decided to also go back to school. SCARY as heck, yes. But I think it's just the thing I need to feel challenged and happier.

Keep us updated on what you choose and how it's going! GOOD LUCK!

hey, that's really exciting! I bet you will LOVE it - and you'll be one of those adult students who always gets everything right and makes the nineteen year olds mad.

Now you get to pick a course..... fun!!!

That is so exciting! It's fun when you get to the point in life where you get to just learn for the sake of finding out about things you like. Ok... maybe I'm just projecting my own experiences on you. ;) Anyway... exciting!!! :):)

Sociology is a great place to start - lots of common knowledge, interesting subject matter, and lots of room for opinion!

As much as it has a rep for being a bit lame, I found the subject matter to be really interesting! I think Psycology is harder for a starting point, I would definitely recommend Sociology.

Good luck, so excited for you! If there's absolutely anything I can help you with please don't hesistate to ask! :)

Yay!!

My first degree is in psychology and I took sociology courses while in process - I don't think you can go wrong either way :)

very cool! Although I would go for an evening course instead of correspondence.. (like a 3 hour once a week one if you can find that)... distance ed is tough with a munchkin around and a house full of distractions and things you feel like you should be doing instead. (Or maybe that's just me... but oy, it's hard.) An evening course gets you out of the house and you can focus!

/end unsolicited advice. ;)

Do it! I went back to university on a part-time basis last September, after a 19 year hiatus, and it was the highlight of the last year for me. My only "rule" was that I would not take practical, career related courses - I've done enough of those over the years. I wanted to study subjects that I was genuinely interested in, and stretch my frame of reference. I took International Development Studies and Social Inequality - I loved both courses, and I enjoyed my class time and all the readings (yes, I've become the annoying mature student I always used to roll my eyes at in my younger days). I can't wait to get back to school in September... I'm trying to decide between philosophy (a BIG leap for me!), religious studies and women's studies. Go for it!

Way to go on even thinking about it! I've always thought I'd go back and finish my masters in psych, but so can't see it happening with the way life keeps going... I have admiration for those who go for it and go back after having life experience and kids. I don't think you can go wrong with either course choices... unless you have the prof I had for my first psych class at UofM!

How exciting! I vote for Psychology because that was my major in University, but I'm excited for you either way. I love learning! You're never too old for that!

As a prof and an often mature student, I suggest you simply take something you are passionate about. Don't worry about your grades - they really are irrelevant anyway. Just pick something you are curious about, and HAVE FUN!!!
